Route Planning Ahead
If your embarking upon a long journey this weekend, make sure you don't get caught up in those traffic jams - plan your route beforehand.

The Automobile Association
For AA members, the on-line information available is far more detailed than that offered to non-members.
Traffic information can be accessed by clicking a region or by motorway.
All details are updated regularly.
Input a Start and a Finish and up to 3 interim destinations.
Results are presented in text form, with thorough descriptions of roads to take including names & numbers.
The AA also provides handy information for car-running costs, a hotel booking service, and a restaurant & pub guide.

RAC
The RAC has a wealth of on-line motorway information, however here it is freely available to members and non-members alike.
Planning a route can be planned using postcodes and town names, and you can also specify up to 3 steps in between.
Choose between getting the fastest or lowest mileage route (even in Europe).
Results are displayed on screen both in text form (naming roads, providing distances and times), and as a graphical map.
Maps can be scrolled around and zoomed in and out.
The RAC will send you an email with updated details of any roadworks, accidents or congestion, for whatever time of day you are ready to leave. This site also contains a Hotel Finder.

Shell
The Shell site features an impressive journey and planning site, featuring a vast archive of town maps for places all over Europe. each of which can be zoomed in, to show a great deal of detail.
As well as being useful for finding a street once you have directions to a town, Shell maps also point out various amenities.
Provides impartial information on local restaurants, tourist attractions & accomodation (including full addresses & telephone numbers).
Features a proper map-printing facility with various options to produce your journey in colour, black & white or greyscale, and in different sizes - up to a full page of A4.
Send a map as an email attachment to someone you are giving directions.
A comprehensive route planner with detailed directions for each step of your journey can be illustrated with a map.

Ordnance Survey Maps
Responsible for maps circulating the UK, Ordnance Survey offers free access to any street map you need.
Maps are highly detailed, enabling you to find small streets in villages.
Conduct searches using town names or postcodes and zoom in on maps for those details.
Ordnance Survey provides a link to the Multimap Website that can provide more maps, including some that are worldwide.
Lists a number of local facilities ie: Cinema's, Hotels, Restaurants, Pubs, Homes for sale and Tourist attractions.
A comprehensive route planner with detailed directions for each step of your journey can be illustrated with a map.
